5G technology provides exponential increase in bandwidth and the number of connections and services offered, so carriers need an innovative network architecture to manage the cost of deployment and operations while delivering on the promise of 5G performance.
Designers of new 5G networks, which include Centralized Radio Access Network (C-RAN) and virtualized Radio Access Network (v-RAN), will need to leverage Ethernet transport technologies with different capacity transport equipment that is distributed through the network. In addition to classic backhaul equipment, 5G networks will also require mid-haul equipment to aggregate multiple Distributed Units (DUs). These units, which form the lower layer of baseband, link to a Centralized Unit (CU), which forms the upper layer of baseband. Some carriers plan to aggregate multiple Radio Units (RUs) to link up to a DU.
As a result, X-haul equipment designers will need to deliver more variations of their equipment with more challenging specifications.
