Universal Serial Bus (USB) is an industry standard that defines cables, connectors and protocols for communication, connection and power delivery between computers and an ever-expanding range of mobile and fixed devices. USB standards are developed and maintained by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). To date, there have been four generations of USB specifications, and billions of devices have shipped with USB 1.0, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. The USB4™ specification, which was introduced in late 2019, promises much faster throughput and advanced capabilities for sharing a single high-speed link.
Created in the mid-1990s, USB has truly become universal and synonymous with the term “plug and play” over the ensuing years. It can now be found just about everywhere. Although best known as the technology that enables peripherals to connect to personal computers, USB functionality has expanded to enable power delivery of up to 100W of power to both hosts and devices, offer data rates to 10 Gbps and create on-board connections in embedded systems via the USB Hi-Speed Interchip Communication (HSIC) interface. With its time-tested protocol and a wide variety of class drivers, USB plays a key role in communications, human-interface devices, video streaming, printing, interior car designs, the Internet of Things (IoT) and a never-ending array of applications that intersect with our daily lives.
We are fully committed to USB and support the development of products which leverage all three vectors of USB’s evolutionary capabilities:
Use these versatile and cost-effective USB-IF compliant USB port expansion solutions for a variety of applications ranging from Hi-Speed USB to 10 Gbps SuperSpeed USB.
Add support for USB 3.1 data transfers and up to 100W of power for faster battery charging times in portable devices.
Implement an ultra-fast interface or security between a USB host controller and popular storage media or communications interfaces.
Enable a single port of connectivity and USB charging in mobile devices or add a USB transceiver to your design.
Connect desktop and mobile PCs to multiple displays to enable high-speed streaming of high-definition video content and sharing of content.
Enable battery charging using both newer and legacy portable device protocols in a single application.
