USB Type-C® and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) Technology

USB Type-C® and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) technology have become mainstream in mobile and laptop applications. Higher voltages and power levels are now required to address the needs for faster charging and more power-hungry devices using USB PD chargers.

USB PD 2.0 and USB PD 3.0 support 9V, 15V and 20V with the ability to transfer up to 100W over a USB C cable and connector. USB PD 3.0 also extends the communication protocol to support features like battery condition, enhanced security and fast role swapping. The USB Programmable Power Supply (PPS) is a supplemental specification added to USB PD 3.0 that describes how power supply and the load communicate with each other for incremental power delivery levels. The PPS is particularly useful for charging batteries.
