Linux® and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOSs) on PolarFire® SoCs


The Linux SDK for PolarFire SoCs is available in Yocto and Buildroot environments. The SDK comes with support for system firmware that handles secure system boot, secure bootloader, crypto services and inter-CPU messaging. The SDK includes driver support for all the microprocessor (MPU) sub-system peripherals and common soft IPs supported for the FPGA fabric. We extend support for various open-source and commercial RTOSs for PolarFire SoCs. You may choose to use our free Eclipse-based SoftConsole development environment or third-party environments to develop your bare metal- or RTOS-based embedded firmware. Open-source RTOS ports on PolarFire SoCs are available as example projects. Commercial RTOSs that include advanced scheduling, memory management and file systems are available from corresponding vendors. 

Networking and Connectivity


10G-Ethernet MAC

We designed the Core10GMAC for the IEEE® 802.3-2012 specification and to support 10GBASE-R, 10GBASE-KR and XGMII interfaces. This configurable core provides the complete MAC and PHY layer when used with a transceiver interface.

USXGMII for Multi-Gigabit Technology

The Core Universal Serial Media Independent Interface (USXGMII) IP carries a single network port over a single SerDes between the MAC and the PHY for multi-gigabit technology at 1G/2.5G/5G/10G data rate.

USB 3.2

A USB-IF-certified, full-featured PC host, device and dual-role can support USB 3.2 Gen 1 devices at 5 Gbps or USB 3.2 Gen 2 devices at 10 Gbps from our IP partner Corigine.

Anybus®

The Anybus CompactCom 40 series of products for industrial Ethernet solutions is based on our SmartFusion® 2 SoC FPGA devices. The highly secure Anybus CompactCom products offer you a lower total cost of ownership and accelerated time to market with a multi-protocol solution that covers all major industrial Ethernet networks and well-established Fieldbus networks. The Anybus CompactCom solution makes it possible to use or design one common Ethernet hardware platform and then download any industrial Ethernet protocol software.

EtherCAT®

Our partner Trinamic's EtherCAT solution includes a plugfest-tested EtherCAT IP and chip solution (TMC8460) for SmartFusion 2 SoC FPGAs. The EtherCAT solution is suitable for applications such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), motor drive/motion drive control, safety Input/Output (I/O) modules and other applications that require EtherCAT communications.

VectorBlox™ Accelerator


The VectorBlox Accelerator Software Development Kit (SDK) offers the most power-efficient Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) /Machine Learning (ML) inference with PolarFire FPGAs. It contains different tools that compile a neural network description from frameworks like TensorFlow and ONNX into a Binary Large Object (BLOB). These BLOBs are stored in Flash and loaded into the DDR memory during execution.

Smart Embedded Vision (SEV) With PolarFire FPGAs and PolarFire SoC FPGAs


As compute workloads move to the edge, PolarFire FPGAs and PolarFire SoC FPGAs present an ideal choice for a new range of compute-intensive edge devices, including those deployed in thermally and power-constrained environments. They are the only mid-range device of their kind that supports dual 4K video processing and quad-core RISC-V® application-class processors running RTOSs and rich operating systems like Linux®. SEV solutions include video, imaging, Machine Learning (ML) IP and application-specific development tools to quickly prototype embedded vision applications including MIPI® CSI-2, HDMI® 2.0, MIPI DSI, 12G SDI, USXGMII and CoaXPress 2.0.

Motor Control


Our multi-axis motor control solution is a deterministic, high-precision, low-power offering of an IP suite with flexible design options and extensive resources. The solution includes algorithms for sensor-less Field Oriented Control (FOC), FOC with Hall-effect sensor, FOC with encoder and FOC with resolver for PMSM/BLDC motors. It caters to a broad range of markets including industrial, medical, space and aviation segments. The solution includes hardware-based demonstrations for integrated dual-axis implementation, a six-axis BLDC motor control and a multi-axis UAV/drone.

Implementing OPC UA With PolarFire SoC FPGAs


The industrial edge has emerged as an established norm for industrial automation requirements that require more than what centralized computing architectures can offer. The most significant design challenge for an edge device is to design for thermally constrained, small power budgets. Although the goal is complete integration at low costs, equally critical considerations are security and reliability to ensure authentic, tamper-proof and safe inferences and communication. 

Our PolarFire SoC FPGA is an intelligent choice for industrial edge applications such as robotics, low-power medical imaging, process control and automation, industrial image processing and analytics, multi-axis motion control, video broadcast equipment and more.

The PolarFire SoC implementation of the OPC UA protocol uses a client-server architecture; the server services data requests that are initiated by the client. PolarFire SoCs can be configured both as a server and a client.
