Designing Fixed Wireless Access

The capital expenditures (capex) and operating expenses (opex) associated with upgrading wired access (for example, to cable, PON or DSL) in the last mile, including wiring the premises, are major barriers for carriers in countries with developed infrastructure. 5G, which enables much higher bandwidth on a per-connection basis, is expected to meet the typical bandwidth requirements for residential users. This presents a highly lucrative revenue opportunity for 5G service providers to provide enhanced service without the costs and challenges associated with installing additional wiring.

For these types of implementations, a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) gateway, comprised of a 5G modem with either an Ethernet or Wi-Fi® router,  is essential equipment at the subscriber end. We understand the distinct design and deployment challenges of creating compact access equipment. Our innovative technologies enable:

  • Efficient and highly accurate end-to-end network synchronization
  • Easy deployment of network equipment
  • Power- and space-efficient network equipment designs
  • Network equipment security

Our product portfolio includes:

  • Well-established SyncE and IEEE® 1588 timing solutions and software
  • The industry’s only Ethernet PHYs with simultaneous support for IEEE 1588 time stamping and 128-bit MACsec (IEEE 802.1AE-2006) or 256-bit MACsec (IEEE 802.1AEbn-2011) with no loss of accuracy
  • Highly secure FPGAs to create tamper-resistant and clone-resistant designs
  • RF Power Amplifiers (PAs), Low-Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) and varactor diodes for frequencies of more than 6 GHz
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) solutions that combine with our low-power FPGAs to deliver power savings of 2W–4W
  • Industry-leading portfolio of security solutions including root of trust and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) devices
  • Extensive selection of power components such as Power Management ICs (PMICs), microcontrollers (MCUs) and Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) with innovative on-chip peripherals for power conversion and Power over Ethernet (PoE) silicon and system products
